Brendan Keaney, Director of Greenwich Dance, has been appointed Artistic Director and Chief Executive of DanceEast, Ipswich. He will take up the post in March 2013. Martyn Rose, Chair of DanceEast said:
‘I am delighted that Brendan Keaney is joining us to lead DanceEast as it moves into the next phase of its development. We are eternally grateful to our previous Artistic Director & Chief Executive, Assis Carreiro, for creating a thriving and dynamic organisation and especially for having the vision and tenacity to give Ipswich one of the best Dance Houses in the world. Brendan has the experience, understanding and ability to build on this legacy and create an exciting new future for DanceEast.’
Peter Conway, Chair of Greenwich Dance said:
‘Brendan has been an inspirational leader of Greenwich Dance. He has made a significant contribution to the cultural life of south-east London, with ground-breaking artistic achievements at The Borough
Hall in Greenwich. Fresh young talent has been nurtured and Greenwich Dance has reached out across the community to bring dance to new audiences and participants. Brendan has pioneered the dynamic new partnership with Trinity Laban. His artistic vision and astute management skills will be much
missed. We wish him every success in his new venture’.
Helen Lax, Regional Director, Arts Council England, East, said:
‘Brendan has a huge amount of experience in dance and the arts, with a national track record of providing high quality dance performances and community experiences. Brendan will bring his special approach to Ipswich, nurturing companies and artists and growing new audiences with partners across the area. The Jerwood DanceHouse is superb as a performance space and as a hub for community activity. It will provide Brendan with the facilities to host his new vision, building on the strong reputation that DanceEast already has locally and nationally.’
Brendanstarted his career in 1979 as a freelance dancer. He performed with a number of independent dance companies, and has a string of film, TV and theatre credits. He has since worked as an animateur
choreographer, teacher and more recently as an administrator and manager. Immediately prior to joining Greenwich Dance in 1996, Brendan was employed as Dance Officer at the (then) Arts Council of England, with responsibility for Independent Dance. Brendan has served on various Boards, Panels and
Choreographic awards and in January 2007 he received the Jane Attenborough Dance UK Industry Award for his ‘outstanding contribution to the art form’.
‘Working at Greenwich Dance, with the support of my wonderful team for 16 years has been an enormous privilege and I will be sad to leave, however I am absolutely delighted to have been appointed to succeed Assis. The job of Director of DanceEast represents one of the most exciting opportunities for dance in the UK. 2013 is DanceEast’s 30th birthday and the organisation now has an amazing building to host the celebrations. This is a fantastic moment for the organisation and I am very much looking forward to the challenges ahead.’
