The Gaze Project

Martin Collins & Pascal Merighi present: GAZE. An Artstrust production supported by Arts Council England and ADA. A new creative model integrating communities into the creative process. For us the term 'community' is not defined simply by locality, instead it is understood and created by a unifying/common link between all the participants.

Gaze will be a new performance Installation within the UK, Germany and France. The concept is the phonological question of observation and understanding of a relationship within a community, the idea of gaze.
Gaze is not something one has or uses; rather, it is the relationship in which someone enters.
(Sturken & Cartwright, 2009)
Within the research and development Martin Collins (Artstrust, Artistic Director) and Pascal Merighi (Performer and Director) will be engaging with current and ex-members of Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch company. Our time with them will be used to explore how we extract the associated memories and feelings of impact from their experiences of being viewed as people within their professional and personal life. Thieir community link being their relationship with the company. The research and development will be staged within the Pina Bausch Company 40th celebrations.

With Alexandre Castres, we will be interviewing the participants and filming them, their reactions, pain, fear, and emotions. In addition to this we will also allow them to use our bodies for them to express this through movement. All of this material (data) will be collected and archived so that we can use this to develop the framework of how we build our artistic response, the installation.

Beyond that, we are going to be developing this framework so that we can take this to additional communities in the future. This will be the core of the integration of communities into the artist practice.

Performance
GAZE Research and Development sharing
Pina40 Festival - Cafe ADA, 11 May 2014
A creative talk/demonstration of the work will take place as part of the Pina40 Festival at CafeADA on the 11th May 2014

This sharing, at Cafe ADA, is work in progress and not the finished product(s). We will be displaying some of the interviews both within an artistic frame and within their own right. There will be a performance by Pascal Merighi, sitting alongside the dissemination of process and methodology via Pascal Merighi and Martin Collins. This will be done in both English and German, (Translation by Thusnelda Mercy).

Team:
Pascal Merighi - Co-Director and Staging
Martin Collins - Co-Director and Producer
Alexandre Castres - Videographer
